Make maintenance part of the design decision

Tait publishes an environmental, social and governance statement covering its manufacturing approach and product lifecycle. That kind of document is worth reading alongside a product page. It changes the discussion from how a setting looks on delivery day to what the owner can do after years of exposure and use. Read claims as the manufacturer’s statements, then ask how they apply to the exact product and environment you have in mind.

Describe the exposure honestly

A covered city balcony, an uncovered coastal terrace and a busy hospitality courtyard place different demands on furniture. Tell the supplier about rain, salt, sunlight, cleaning and frequency of use. Do not reduce the description to “outdoors”. Ask which finishes suit those conditions and which care steps are essential. If furniture will be moved daily, include that in the brief; weight and grip become practical design qualities.

Find out what can be repaired

Ask whether feet, slings, cushions, fasteners and surface coatings can be replaced or renewed. Request the process, not just a general assurance that a product is durable. Who assesses damage? Is the item returned to a workshop? Are parts available separately? A repair option that requires an impractical journey may be less useful to your business than it first sounds. Record the answer with the product specification.

Build care into normal operations

For a venue, assign responsibility for routine cleaning and periodic checks. Keep the manufacturer’s care instructions somewhere staff can find them. Avoid substituting a stronger cleaner without checking compatibility. For a home, consider whether you will actually follow the proposed maintenance routine. A finish is not a good fit if it only performs under a care schedule you will never maintain.

Compare evidence, not adjectives

When comparing products, put construction, care, repair options and warranty terms in separate columns. Terms such as sustainable or long-lasting do not answer all four questions.
