How to read a room before photographing it
Look for movement, light and relationships before choosing the first camera position.
Begin with how the room is used
Walk through without taking photographs. Notice the route between doors, the place someone naturally sits and the objects that organise the space. Write one sentence about the room’s purpose. This becomes a useful filter when deciding which views explain the room and which merely repeat it.
Find the relationships
A room is more than a collection of objects. Look for the relationship between a table and a window, a shelf and an opening, or a material that continues into the next space. A photograph can show those connections. A sequence made entirely of isolated details often loses the spatial idea.
Observe changes in light
Note the direction and character of light at the time you visit. A bright window may be central to the experience even if it is challenging to photograph. Discuss how to retain that feeling with the photographer. Do not equate a dark corner with a design mistake; it may be part of how the room is intended to work.
Edit without rewriting the space
Remove incidental distractions with the owner’s agreement. Keep meaningful objects and evidence of use where they support the story. Styling should clarify the room rather than manufacture a different one. Photograph a reference before moving anything so the space can be restored afterwards.
Make the sequence legible
Start with a view that establishes the room, then explain its relationships and finish with a few details. Write a caption for each planned image. If several captions say the same thing, the sequence may need fewer pictures. Note the designers, makers and photographer while the information is readily available.
